LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A
Pedagogical Foundation: Character ≠ Glyph
1. The Character (Semantic Codepoint)
A character is an abstract semantic code point assigned by the Unicode Standard (such as U+0041 for “A” or U+20B9 for “₹”). It represents textual meaning independently of visual appearance.
2. The Glyph (Visual Contour Geometry)
A glyph is the actual vector drawing rendered by a font binary. One character may map to multiple visual glyphs (such as small caps, swash alternates, or tabular digits) through OpenType substitution tables.
3. GSUB Ligatures & Complex Scripts
Multiple characters can combine into a single visual glyph (such as “f” + “i” → “fi” ligature), while Indic scripts like Gujarati require complex reordering and conjunct substitution during shaping.
